this is a pic of me on a walk at moonlight beach in encinitas, ca (probably about 2 1/2 years ago). we used to live right up the street.

This weeks FBFF topic is “Fitness and Fashion”. As always…be sure and stop by modlychic to read all of the other responses. and i apologize in advance that mine is so wordy! =)

1. Do you keep some kind of fitness routine? Why? not really. back in 2005, i was working out EVERY day and was in the BEST shape of my life. and then i moved to NYC. although i walked more than i ever had in my life, i also ordered in food right to my doorstep ALL THE TIME. that is one of the MANY things i really miss about NYC. chinese, fake mexican food, pizza, pasta…you name it…i had it delivered. and even though i had a gym in my work office building (i worked at goldman sachs), i still gained 10lbs living there. then i came home a year and a half later and lost it all…sunny california weather must’ve melted it off =) and THEN i had my son (7mo ago). i put on 50+ lbs. i am just now back to my pre-pregnancy weight. now i just REALLY need to tone it up. ladies who have had children…is it shocking to you how different your body is after having a baby…OMG. like, woah. sorry to bore you…so no, i do not have any fitness routine. i occasionally do workout videos and i take the baby out walking in his stroller often but that is about it.

2. Has working out, maybe training for a marathon or something of that nature, helped with your own perception of body image? i have never trained for a marathon because i am not a runner. i started p90x RIGHT before i got pregnant and then i quit immediately because i was so paranoid to do anything….especially that crazy hard workout. i have not touched it since. but when i was in shape years ago…it felt SO GOOD. it was great putting on my clothes and actually feeling like i looked GOOD. not having to worry about my muffin top was REALLY nice. almost makes me want to do it again. almost.

3. When you are hitting the gym or just going out for a long walk what do you wear? Is it about functionality or fashion? i do not get dressed up for my walks (well, except for my logo/header pic…ha ha). but i do usually have on a bit of makeup. i love my lululemon workout pants & shorts. i wear them with a tank or tee shirt.

4. Do you feel there is a cultural perception of what you ‘should’ be doing for your own physical fitness? not really, no. what’s weird is that in the last month, two people have referred to me as “fit”. it’s nice and all but, just because i am thin…does not mean i am fit.  i mean i could probably run if someone was chasing me but i am definitely not an athlete. in high school i would rather take a non-suit than chase after a ball. i really need to work on my fitness.

5.  Dream big… what would be your ultimate fitness goal? oh man, i just wish my bootay didn’t hit me in the back of my knees anymore!!! =)

I sooo hear you about the post-baby body thing. I had my little guy almost two years ago and although I lost the weight pretty quickly, my gut never bounced back. I HATE the muffin top!!

I keep hoping my body will return to the shape it was in five years ago on diet alone, but I think that’s wishful thinking…so to the gym I go! If you figure out a way to get into a routine with a little one, I’m all ears.

I enjoyed reading your responses. It is hard to stay motivated isn’t it? I was so young when I had my children that I had no problem gaining my body back. Or maybe I got lucky. Or maybe I am blessed. At least someone called you “fit” and not “skinny” – I hate that word!
    Happy Friend Friday!

Hahaha, I had to smile after your last answer. Witty and honest.
About body image, I guess we are “trained” to see someone’s physique (weight/size) as a condition to (un)healthy lifestyle. I try to defy this view all the time. You can’t say by how someone looks how their physical fitness is.

From what I hear it is rough going getting back into shape after a baby. I haven’t had to do it yet. I’m dreading it. P90x is really tough from what I hear. I have only done (most of) the yoga so far.

You are so funny with your last remark.
OK, you have to read mine cause I wrote the same exact thing about NYC!
I totally agree being thin does not mean fit and being heavy set does not mean ‘out of shape’. I have known very thin people who can’t keep up a regular fast pace walk while an overweight person can kick my butt in running or a game of basketball!

I love how honest you are, you are too funny!! You must be blessed with good genetics and metabolism b/c if I eat semi-healthy and don’t work out, I gain weight. And you are way thinner than me. But it’s true what you said. Thin doesn’t mean you are fit. I have a couple friends who are super skinny and eat terrible things and have no muscle mass…I’ve heard that referred to as a skinny fat. I’m not saying you are that, I’m just saying you’re lucky to have good metabolism!

And even though I haven’t had any kids, I’ve seen my body shape change when I gain or lose weight now compared to what it did even 5 years ago. I think some of it is just age…which is sad cuz I’m only 30!

I had the same problem when I moved to NYC. And I was always walking so it most have been the delivery. I agree.
